Java applets have been around for some time now. However, many reported Your security settings have blocked a self-signed application from running messages while using them.

The issue is quite similar to the Application blocked by Java security message we covered not long ago.

Since this issue blocks the functionality of Java-based apps entirely, we’ve decided to create a guide that will help you easily bypass it.

Why are Java applications blocked by security settings?

  • The applet you’re trying to run isn’t added to the exceptions list.
  • Security settings can often cause this problem to appear.
  • The application isn’t signed properly, therefore, it’s blocked.
  • The Java applet comes from an untrusted authority.
  • The Jar file is missing permission attributes.

How do I unblock a Java application this is blocked by security settings?

1. Make an Exception Site List

  1. Press Windows + R and type in control.exe.
  2. Click on Programs, and that click on Java.
  3. Go to the Security tab and click on the Edit Site List.

  4. Inside the Exception Site List, click on Add button.
  5. Paste the URL of the Java applet that you have issues with.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Continue when prompted by a security warning.
  8. Try to open the applet again.

In essence, any URL that you insert within the exception list should now work without any issues, and it will help you get rid of Your security settings have blocked a self-signed application from running error.

2. Set the applet’s security level to High

  1. Press Windows + R and type in control.exe.
  2. Click on Programs and then on Java.
  3. Go to the Security tab, and under Security level, select the High option.
  4. Restart the browser that you want to run the applet it

By following any of these methods, any self-signed applets should now be able to run easily on your browser. However, remember that this is a workaround that should only be used when dealing with applets you trust.
